“My art is about how the land and sky feel to me. I begin painting in ‘plein air’, gathering inspiration and information from what I see around me. I find early morning and late afternoon are the most magical times to paint outside. Nature nourishes, excites, and soothes me. I am not interested in literally rendering a scene. Rather, when I’ve gathered enough outside information, I move to an intuitive dimension. I improvise, playing with color and mark until the painting matches my feelings for the subject. I add and subtract paint, often using my fingers, huge brushes and palette knives to discover new color combinations and exciting shapes. Sometimes, I let a panel dry, then lightly sand the surface and seek new information about the essence of the scene. Listening to the heartbeat of the subject, I follow its lead, working quickly and intuitively. I feel so fortunate to be a witness of nature’s miracles and to communicate this energy and spirit. My art is about a joyful oneness with the Universe.”
